CORPSE - From The Grave (USA)
Cling Records

These guys have mastered the attack of killer Bee`s guitary style of playing. Corpse is reminicent of Butchered At Birth and Tomb of The Mutiliated era Cannibal Corpse while the long segments of fast tromello riffing remind me of Scrolls Of The Megilloth. The band plays an assult of chaotic rapid fast death strumming and broken rhythms. The Growl is rather Chris Barnesish while being more enunciated and some what more evil and harsh sounding with less low gurgling but only a kean ear will hear such subtle differences.

The vocals were too low in the mix and don`t have enough UMPH to realy pack a wallop, this is a trend I have noticed now in both of the Cling albums I have the other one being Frank`s Enemy "Neoblasphemies" album but it`s not nearly as bad in this case. At times this band sounds rather cheesey and at others like they are making a real good attempt at the brutality but it just doesnt come across right while at others the true awe of the music shines right through and you can realy appreciate it. The albums beauty only comes through if you listen to the whole thing through. A good example of the fractured kind of melody is the song number ten "Dwell In" which has a lot of it at the begining of the song and then it transitions into the kind of brutal warbling style. Most songs start off and have most of the songs played in the swarm of bee`s style and then transition into the slower parts (again like Scrolls) The guitar has a rather rubbery sound and doesnt achieve the kind of intensity that the riffing style realy should. but it does have its own unique kind of harshness. The bass is also playd in a weird rubbery sounding way.

The entire album doesnt have the explosive punch but instead it more of rolls into you instead of jumping right out and punching you in the face the unending growls and battering guitar sneaks up on you until before you know it you are playing the CD over and over again. The oddest thing about the record is that I listen to it almost continously through out the day (for days on end now) even though it didnt ever realy blow me away. One song "The Will" towards the middle end of the song has a heavy heavy Metalica`s "One" style Riff that is played over and over again until its drilled into you. I also like the song "In Doubt" which is one of those slow apocolyptic crushing death metal songs especialy at the begining. "So Called Unity" is also slow but has a totaly different feel; almost not even death metal I don`t realy know how`d I`d describe it. Kind of a slow Dierge but not in a Crowbar sence. In closing, I don`t think this album has any real devistating crush but I can`t stop listening to it for some reason! ;). I think it just has realy good music. So there for I give it an 8.

SCORE: 8 /10
